Dancing Queen

February 25, 2013

Last Friday night, I went on a date with a new woman for the first time in 19 years.

Our first school Father/Daughter dance.

K likes to do things right, so she ordered a wrist corsage for A.

And it coordinated with her dress, purse, shoes, and headband, of course.

The dance was held in a small ballroom at a local country club.

A lot of the time, the girls danced by themselves, mostly because the dads had no idea what the songs were. Of course, I’m totally current on my Katy Perry.

I did manage to get out on the dance floor a time or two.

K also purchased A some shoes just for the occasion. Of course, they lasted about 3 minutes before joining the rest of the girls' shoes on the side of the dance floor.

The had a slide show of father/daughter pictures. Of course, this really brought out the dads' cameras.

I was no exception.

I was no exception.

A had a great time dancing with her friends.

And bustin’ a move of her own.  And has anybody else used the phrase “bustin’ a move” in the past 20 years?

Yes, this is actually a conga line.

A likes to twirl.

Just a random picture of A looking too grown up.

Why won’t this song/dance die gracefully?

Since A’s dress incorporated glitter, I had a good excuse for coming home covered in it.

And K definitely didn’t mind me dancing with this beautiful young lady.

These are a few of K’s favorite things

The kids had a project where they had to cut out pictures from a magazine.

First  dilemma … finding one of these mythical “magazines” which used to be popular and were made out of paper, I believe.

These photos had to be of items that could be considered modern-day “idols” for many people.  When A was finished cutting out pictures, K noticed a disturbing trend.

For those of you scoring at home, that’s a golf club, a purse, shoes, and jewelry.

K was, shall we say, less than amused.

WDW – Day Eight

February 3, 2013

Well, we went eight straight days to a Disney park and lived to tell about it. Given the choice of where they wanted to go today, the kids chose Magic Kingdom, of course. So off we went for our 4th go round …

The last time seeing this entrance on this trip

For some reason, these gates are always the first signal that we’re at the Magic Kingdom
20130202-200528.jpg
Today, we decided to take the ferry over.
20130202-200735.jpg
I have to figure out some way to stop this trend of people using iPads to take videos.

First up, K took A to meet Tinkerbell

Big Thunder was definitely our favorite of the week

Yet another trip on Big Thunder. But this time, J and A wanted to sit by themselves.

The entire Astro Orbiter ride. Caution: May Cause Nausea

If J ever decides that he’s too cool for Disney when he’s a teenager, I’ll remind him of the hoards of roving Brazilian teenage girls who come to the park this time of year.
20130202-203955.jpg
And I’ll also mention to him that there’s always a national cheerleading competition this time of year as well

A quick stop for some more sugar products.

Ready to go.
20130202-204933.jpg

I think they liked it.

As for K, well, I’m also pretty sure I know how she felt about it.

But no, we won’t be purchasing a photo today.

As our time wound down, we were able to squeeze in one more ride on Big Thunder

With that, it was time to wave goodbye to Disney World.

WDW – Day Seven

February 1, 2013

Since we’re on our second round of the parks, we’ve slowed down a little. And by that I mean I’m not dragging everybody around at breakneck speed anymore. I tend to do the parks “commando style,” meaning I want to squeeze every ounce of fun out of every minute the parks are open. While this leads to having lots of fun, it tends to cause K to want to kill me. So, for the sake of marital harmony, we took it easy today. We were only in the parks for 9 hours.

Back to Epcot

Wear and tear is starting to show on the troops
20130201-204846.jpg
But they quickly rebounded for the first trip in Soarin’

This picture summarizes Disney. Beautiful vistas, amazing architecture, stroller parking
20130201-205038.jpg
We did go on the Imagination ride once, even though, ironically, there isn’t much imagination left in it since they dumbed it down several years ago.
20130201-205215.jpg
We saw the incredibly cheesy movie “Captain EO,” which was made in 1986 and re-released after Michael Jackson died. To say the years have not been kind to it would be an understatement.
20130201-205439.jpg

After seeing Michael Jackson, A had a very astute question:

I can remember being fascinated by these fountains as a kid.

At lunch, J protected us from marauding birds.
20130201-211848.jpg
One last flight on Soarin’
20130201-212433.jpg
On Soarin’ they warn everybody to take off loose shoes. A really liked the idea of going shoeless.
20130201-212505.jpg
J’s best samurai pose in Japan.
20130201-212705.jpg
A quick stop in France for some eclairs, chocolate tarts, and croissants.

Watching the fife and drum corps outside the American Pavilion.

Surprisingly, this is Japanese for “Funnel Cake”
20130201-213218.jpg
A quick stop in Italy.
20130201-213336.jpg
One last ride on Test Track
20130201-213543.jpg
I had to ride Mission Space by myself …
20130201-213808.jpg
… mostly because K tends to need one of these barf bags when she rides it. And yes, they actually have barf bags on the ride.
20130201-213854.jpg

This is a ride on the end of a robotic arm. You get to design your own roller coaster layout, then the ride recreates it virtually. Once the kids saw this, they had to do it.

And they loved it.
20130201-214430.jpg
We then started to head out.
20130201-214728.jpg
We got in one more ride on Spaceship Earth.
20130201-214807.jpg
Our pictures up on the end of the ride.
20130201-214843.jpg
I could take pictures if this all day.
20130201-215042.jpg
This too.
20130201-215117.jpg
It’s too bad they don’t like each other.
20130201-215206.jpg

After leaving Epcot, we went to Downtown Disney for a little dinner and a little shopping. K now wants me to figure out how they do these lights so we can recreate it at home.

I think dinner at The Earl of Sandwich is a new tradition.
20130201-215642.jpg
When J saw this, we had to make a pit stop.
20130201-215741.jpg
Score!
20130201-215824.jpg

With that, we headed home for our last night in town. Tomorrow, we’re heading to whatever park the kids want to visit.

WDW – Day Six

February 1, 2013

So, today was pretty much the reason we’re at Disney. Eight years ago, we welcomed J and A into the world. Since this was their day, we went were they wanted to go. So back to the Magic Kingdom we went.

Since we slept in a little this morning, we were parked so far away that we actually had to take the tram. Of course the kids were actually excited about this.
20130131-214406.jpg
Watching the castle show.
20130131-215229.jpg
J wanted to ride the barnstormer
20130131-215325.jpg
So of course we had to ride in the front row
20130131-215427.jpg

20130131-215522.jpg
Then it was time for, yes, more teacups.
20130131-215545.jpg

Part of our tradition is having a meal in Cinderella* Castle.

* Edit note: My lovely wife pointed out that the castle actually belongs to Cinderella’s in-laws, meaning the true name is more if a description of the movie the castle is in, and should not be described in the possessive form. And people call me a geek.

The other princesses greet you at your table. A was, shall we say, a little bit excited.

When the other princesses showed up, J didn’t want to hug any of them, except for Aurora. He has a thing for blondes.

While A was happy she wasn’t dreaming

After lunch, K took A to go meet some more characters, and I took J to Tom Sawyer’s island. He was ready for any trouble we might encounter.

While on the island, J made a couple of friends and spent some time playing hide and go seek. When his friends started to leave, they all went to one of the caves on the island. As I started to follow, J turned around and said “Dad, you don’t always have to follow me around. I’ll be OK.”

So after I stopped weeping openly, we headed off the island to meet back up with K, A, and Nana.

Time for another ride on Big Thunder Mountain

Look, characters wandering the streets. Must be another parade.

While we were on the PeopleMover, they were working on Space Mountain with the lights on.

One more round of fireworks

I think it was a pretty happy birthday.

Tomorrow, back to Epcot.
